How to Make Food Photography

How to Make Food Photography

Are you always captivated by the food photos on the social media? Have you ever wondered about how to make these mouth-watering food photos? Do you want to make your own appealing food photos? Here is the basic tutorial you should know to start your food photography journey.

  1. Lighting

Food photography is a sort of artistic creation, every piece in the photo counts for the final result. To achieve a good story-telling photograph, light should be given top priority in food photography. Natural light is the best lighting for food photography, which shows the original tone, texture and flavor of the food.

The point is that direct natural light should be avoided to prevent bright highlights and hash shadows in the photo. To improve the quality of the light, a diffuser is necessary when shooting beside the bright window. It can be a thin white sheet or even a white paper.

When there is light, there is shadow. Soft shadow would add depth and visual interest into a photo. However, a hash shadow may ruin the whole story. Most improper shadow can be solved by a diffuser. If not, like shooting outdoors on a sunny day, a reflector is required to brighten up the shadow.

  1. Composition

Composition is another factor in telling a good story. When constructing the photo, colors play a decisive role as they may affect the overall feel of the image. Similar colors can create a comfort feeling and a harmonious composition. Contrasting colors may create a more vibrant and dynamic image, evoking a different emotion. Color contract can be created in food or between the food and the background.

Lines and layers are also trusty techniques in composition. Cutlery and cooking utensils are the best choice, as they have strong shape and lines. To add more interests to the composition, ingredients or spices can be used as decoration of the whole scene. A spoon filled with colorful spice or a slightly sprinkling part of spice would add more visual effects to the photo. Besides, scattered ingredients or spices in specific order can also create lines to build the composition.

Last but not least, leave some space in the whole composition to put more emphasis on the main subject and tell more of a story.

  1. Shooting angle

As the lighting and composition is done, here comes the shooting time. To achieve good results of food photography, a proper angle counts a lot and would affect the type of story the photo tells.

There are three common angles in food photography, that is shooting from above, shooting in front and shooting diagonally. Keep the size, shape and other unique features of the food in mind and choose the one that best highlights those features.

Shooting from above shows all the details and beautiful shapes within the scene, which is considered as the best way to tell a story. It’s also greater to avoid distracts in backgrounds. To show the interesting layers of the food, such as cakes or colorful drink in glass, shooting in front is more suitable. When both the top view showing the details and the side view creating layers are needed, to shoot diagonally would convey more information of the story.

Try to shoot from several angles and choose the one with best results.

  1. Use A Backdrop

Background plays an essential role in all types of photography, food photography is no exception. A good background will place the viewer’s attention right on the highlights you would like to show. It also adds features and textures to the photos.

A neutral background is considered as the best choice for food photography. It makes an complement to the food without taking away attention. And the wooden background is the most versatile type in food photography. The neutral texture and color brings more depth to the photo.
